Epistemic weakening with future and must : non veridicality, evidentiality, and partial knowledge

چکیده
In this paper, we show that future morphemes in Greek and Italian have purely epistemic non-predictive readings, behaving as equivalent to English must. We call this use ‘epistemic future’. Epistemic future appears to have an evidential component: it cannot be used if the speaker knows, either via visual perception, or via a report, that the prejacent proposition p is true. This renders epistemic futures nonveridical, on a par with must (Giannakidou 1998, 1999, Giannakidou and Mari 2012a,b). The judgment with the future is epistemically weaker than an unmodalized assertion, and relies on partial knowledge supporting p. We show that partial knowledge is not indirect knowledge. Our analysis contrasts with von Fintel and Gillies 2010 who argue that must is ‘strong’, and further refines the classical ‘weak’ analysis of universal epistemic modals ( Kartunnen 1972, Kratzer 1981, Giannakidou 1998, 1999 and more recently Lassiter 2013). 1 Epistemic future: core data from English, Dutch,

(Non)veridicality, evaluation, and event actualization: evidence from the subjunctive in relative clauses
In this paper, we study the subjunctive relative clause as a means to understand the relation between (non)veridicality, existence and event actualization. I argue that the subjunctive in the relative clause carries a presupposition of epistemic uncertainty as to the existence of a referent for the modified NP. This uncertainty can only be satisfied in non-veridical contexts, hence the distribu...
متن کاملOn the evidential nature of the Italian future
The core question to be addressed when dealing with the future tense is whether it has a temporal or a modal interpretation. Both answers have been investigated in the literature 1. In this paper, we argue for treating the future as a modal and more specifically as an evidential. Unlike previous approaches, which treat it as a universal quantifier over times or world-time pairs 2, we claim that...
متن کاملEpistemic and evidential marking in discourse: Effects of register and debatability
The use of evidential and epistemic marking as a rhetorical strategy has received little attention in the literature. Speakers often make judgments on the basis of perceptual, reported, or inferred evidence, thus the relationship between epistemicity and evidentiality is often close and difficult to demarcate. However, whereas epistemicity involves the speaker’s or writer’s evaluation, judgment...
متن کاملOn truth unpersistence: At the crossroads of epistemic modality and discourse
We propose a semantic analysis of the particles afinal (European Portuguese) and alla fine (Italian) in terms of the notion of truth unpersistence, which combines both epistemic modality and constraints on discourse structure. We argue that the felicitous use of these modal particles requires that the truth of a proposition p* fail to persist through a temporal succession of epistemic states, w...
متن کاملSemantic Maps and the Identification of Cross-Linguistic Generic Categories: Evidentiality and its Relation to Epistemic Modality
Cross-linguistic generic categories like evidentiality, tense, aspect, number, and person are entrenched in linguistic theory. However, it is not clear whether there is much empirical substance to them. There is a remarkable lack of criteria for what counts as a category. This paper tries to show that semantic maps can be used to give empirical substance to claims about cross-linguistic generic...
